This case study explores the design and development of a product I co-founded. RevOwl is an interactive product demo builder that caters to sales and marketing teams. We aimed to reduce product demo creation time by 75% compared to traditional methods and increase buyers' purchase intent by 80%. I led design and engineering at this venture and this was my first deep dive into designing and building a SaaS.

Challenges

The main challenge was to help users adapt to a steep learning curve involved in creating interactive product demos. It was extremely important that users felt supported and cared for while using the product. We had to carefully balance aspects of a typical SaaS with innovative design elements to keep the product familiar and trendy at the same time.

Design Solution

We identified areas of the user journey that seemed hard to navigate in other product demo builder platforms and after extensive user-research, iterated on several alternate flows that would make product demo creation seamless.

We introduced two key elements that gave us a distinct competitive edge

  1. Demo Library which is a collection of demos created that can be customised and designed according to the user's brand in just 2 steps. The demo library was shareable with just a unique URL and this reduced the time to create a collection of product demos by 75% and helped the SaaS buyers develop a complete understanding of the product.

  2. Demo Widget which can be embedded into our user's web application that allowed end users to view demos for specific flows or use cases in the application and increase product adoption.

Outcomes

As part of RevOwl's product, I designed and built several interfaces

  • a web application for demo creation

  • a chrome extension for easy product capture and annotation

  • and a demo widget for product demo integration into external applications

As myy first complete exposure to product design, building RevOwl helped me understand our users better and develop a product that truly catered to their needs. In spite of an arduous and demanding time at RevOwl, I personally achieved several milestones in my design and engineering journey.

By the end of the year, we partnered with businesses across finance, manufacturing and healthcare and helped increase their product adoption by an average of 45%. We reduced demo creation and updation time by 80%.
